I felt like I didn't fully convey everything I wanted to in the previous column about emotional regulation.

Essentially, the focus is not on managing emotions but on comprehending them, finding a constructive way to express them appropriately, and making deliberate choices instead of being influenced by subconscious impulses.
Self-awareness is essential for handling emotions effectively. Understanding one's identity and motivations is crucial for grasping one's feelings. In my journey of personal growth, I frequently compare myself to a detective, investigating my thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and attitudes.
My breakthrough in this field began when I established a consistent meditation practice, which heightened my awareness of my thoughts and emotions. As Eckhart Tolle explains in his books, meditation and mindfulness practices teach one to observe and acknowledge one's internal experiences.
Many individuals are unaware of the reasons behind their actions, as they have not tried to introspect and understand themselves and their inner thoughts. It is common for people to numb their emotions instead of confronting uncomfortable feelings or past wounds.
Engaging in such work may lead to facing consequences that require individuals to participate in challenging conversations or adjust to unexpected changes. Self-reflection, emotional management, and recognition of personal strengths and weaknesses can be demanding, but the rewards that may come after this journey justify the effort.
After all my effort, I now perceive myself as a significantly healthier individual. I have examined my triggers, fears, dreams, defence mechanisms (fight, flight, freeze, fawn), attitudes, beliefs about myself and the world, how I relate to others (attachment style), and my life's purpose.
Understanding myself more has enabled me to continually improve my ability to handle challenges and responsibilities. I recognize my value as an individual, independent of comparison to others; therefore, I do not feel the need to seek validation from others.
Improving my ability to remain unaffected by other people or external situations has been a significant development for me. By identifying my triggers and practising over time, I have enhanced my composure and become more adept at evaluating situations calmly before responding rather than reacting impulsively. As a result, many issues that once troubled me no longer have the same impact, thanks to my progress in addressing my past challenges.
Whenever I am affected by something, my curiosity is piqued as it reveals aspects of myself that I have not yet addressed. It also provides insight into my past behaviours and those of my family or ancestors. I see the result of my hard work when I respond to stimuli or situations differently, which is the most significant victory.
