I was introduced to meditation and mindfulness about ten years ago, and using such a practice has improved my life.

At first, I became aware of my thoughts during interview therapy with a psychoanalyst, and I was also introduced to guided meditation when I began attending spiritual classes.

Despite knowing for quite some time that meditation is beneficial, as my spiritual mentors have consistently highlighted its significance in advancing the spiritual journey, I only practised it sporadically.

However, about three years ago, I started meditating every day. I used to come home from work, lie down on the couch, and meditate there for 20 minutes. (Yes, I tended to fall asleep; no, one should not meditate lying down for that reason.)

Still, I was typically awake and promptly started to observe a distinct trend; those 20 minutes were almost always dedicated to contemplating work. I couldn't help but dwell on particular issues I had to address or events and circumstances unfolding at that moment.

I can tell you that I was not solving these issues or developing great ideas. Instead, my mind was consumed by matters outside my control. As a result, this approach turned out to be extremely unproductive, wasting my precious free time on pointless contemplations.

Upon realizing this pattern, I managed to interrupt it by asking myself, "Are you revisiting that thought?" and opting for different thoughts. Consequently, meditation enabled me to shift my focus away from any perceived or actual issues I faced and instead select how I wanted to spend my time.

While the mind can be a powerful asset, it can frequently wander unchecked. Through meditation and mindfulness, I have discovered effective methods for introspection, observation, and evaluation of the negative and unproductive narratives I create internally. These practices enable individuals to observe their thoughts, emotions, and perspectives, laying the groundwork for personal growth.
